South Africa’s most uniquely situated wine farm falls within the pristine environs of the Cederberg Wilderness Area, which lies in the Cape Floral Kingdom. Cederberg Wines is situated in a unique climatic zone: it can be described as a cool Mediterranean climate, rather than a maritime or coastal climate. The average temperature during the day varies between 12 and 18 °C in winter, rising to 29,3 °C in January and 39,9 °C in February. The farm Dwarsrivier, where most of the grapes for Cederberg Wines are cultivated, is situated at the foot of Sneeuberg Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the Western Cape at 2 026 m above sea level.

It is here that winemaker David Nieuwoudt leads a ‘team with attitude’ to produce award-winning wines from their high-altitude vineyards. The secret behind their ‘wines with altitude’? A unique terroir and a pure, virus-free environment.

The Five Generations range is Cederberg Private Cellar’s flagship range. The Nieuwoudt family started farming on Dwarsrivier farm in 1893 and winemaker David Nieuwoudt is the fifth generation Nieuwoudt on the farm. The first wine-grape vineyards were planted in 1973 by David’s grandfather, Oom Pollie Nieuwoudt. Oom Pollie made the first Cederberg wine in 1977 and was known for his Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1997 David took over from his uncle, Flippie Nieuwoudt. The Five Generations Chenin Blanc is made from a single vineyard. The top barrels are selected, and a limited quantity of each wine is released every year.

For the 2018 vintage twelve selected barrels were used to produce 1000 cases. Delicate aromas of honey, lime zest, roasted nuts and peaches laced with sweet vanilla undertones. Well-integrated wood and ageing on the lees developed a full, rich palate with a smooth lingering finish. This Chenin Blanc is concentrated and structured for longevity. An elegant well-crafted wine.
