#DrinkChenin – L’Avenir

In South Africa, Chenin Blanc previously held a reputation as a workhorse grape, a vigorous variety with high yields used for simple, large-production wines and the base for local brandy distillation.

But the cultivar has taken on an entirely new image! Today, it produces high-quality wines across multiple styles and appellations within the country.

Known to acclimate to a variety of conditions, Chenin is a pure expression of terroir.

L’Avenir is one of the leading Stellenbosch boutique wineries that specialises in South Africa’s emblematic varietals: and Chenin Blanc is one of them!

Situated four kilometres from Stellenbosch on the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain, the estate is right in the heart of South Africa’s most revered wine appellation.

L’Avenier produces two exceptional Chenin Blancs. Provenance Chenin Blanc and Single Block Chenin Blanc. Two wines from the same farm but worlds apart from one another!

Provenance Chenin Blanc

Made from a selection of vineyards on the cooler sites of L’Avenir Estate. Older vineyards of more than 40 years contribute to the depth of this wine. This wine is a crisp and delicate expression of Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc. This blend of French oak matured and unwooded Chenin Blanc from old vineyards presents a fine balance of natural acidity, generous fruit and a touch of roasted almonds.

Single Block Chenin Blanc

Produced from a vineyard that was planted in 1971, the L’Avenir Single Block Chenin Blanc unveils balance and complexity that is synonymous with old vines. Parcel selection in the vineyard and cellar, combined with minimum intervention winemaking, results in a true masterpiece.

Situated in a secluded little valley next to a lake on L’Avenir Estate, Block 30 vitally benefits from the cooling effect of breezes that sweep across the water. Block 30 Chenin Blanc has stood the test of time and consistently produces wines of exceptional quality and character.

The combination of a unique micro-climate, moderate growth and old vines yield small bunches, with tiny berries and concentrated flavour.

L’Avenir was proud to serve the Single Block Chenin Blanc 2017 to the global business and political leaders at the 49th World Economic Forum (WEF) annual gathering in February 2019.
