Chateau Libertas is a real South African original. Its tradition of quality goes all the way back to 1932.
That’s when William Charles Winshaw first gave the country a tasty, lightly wooded dry red blend it could call its own. In those days anything similar would have been imported, most likely from Europe.
Few locals were drinking wine back in the day and if they did, they preferred it sweet and fortified. A widely travelled medical doctor, Dr Winshaw wanted to a make a wine to enjoy with food just the way the Europeans were doing. For them wine was a way of life.
They considered it good for the digestion and believed it brought people together at the dinner table. He reckoned if he could produce something well-priced, well-made and easy-drinking even people who weren’t accustomed to wine would see the sense and sheer pleasure of his proposition. And he wasn’t wrong. Before long, he had 80,000 subscribers, who were buying his fine Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend at a shilling a bottle.
There never has been a fixed formula in making Chateau Libertas. It’s about getting the balance right for a beautifully integrated combination of ripe berry fruit, elegant wooding and food-friendly refreshment
