Rust en Vrede Wine Estate, nestled in the heart of the Stellenbosch region in South Africa, is a name synonymous with excellence in winemaking.
With a rich history dating back to 1694, this iconic winery has consistently produced some of the country’s finest wines.
The official date on the Title Deed of Rust en Vrede Wine Estate is March 12th, 1694. The property was granted by the Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel and the Cape Dutch buildings on the property date back to 1780. Today, these historic buildings all have National Monument status.
These building are used on a daily basis by Proprietor, Jean Engelbrecht who to this day still lives in the Manor house where he grew up, and the original winery is now the Rust en Vrede Restaurant.
Jean Engelbrecht parents, Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht, acquired Rust en Vrede in 1977 and immediately embarked on a full restoration of the Estate. First, they restored and equipped the original winery, and in 1978 Jean’s father made the first vintage of the modern era. An extensive vineyard re-planting initiative took place, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Over the years, these wines have gone from strength to strength.
The terroir of Rust en Vrede Wine Estate is a true expression of the remarkable Stellenbosch region, with its vineyards strategically situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, where the combination of well-drained, granite-based soils and a temperate maritime climate create the perfect conditions for grape cultivation.
These unique factors bestow Rust en Vrede’s wineswith their distinctive character, showcasing rich, concentrated flavours and elegant tannins.
The influence of the cooling breezes from False Bay contributes to the slow ripening of the grapes, allowing for the development of complex aromas and flavours. This terroir, with its harmonious balance of natural elements, plays a pivotal role in Rust en Vrede’s ability to consistently produce world-class wines that capture the essence of the South African winemaking tradition.
